AI Escrow: Escrow4all now also safeguards continuity, evidence, and AI knowledge
Document analysis, customer service, fraud detection, fully automated agents: in most organizations, AI is no longer just a pilot, but a permanent part of business-critical processes. In those same organizations, escrow for these AI solutions is often not yet a standard part of the continuity policy, even though the dependence on models, prompts, data, and external platforms is at least as real as the dependence on regular software. Escrow4all is therefore introducing AI Escrow: an expansion of existing escrow services, specifically focused on the components on which an AI solution actually depends.
An AI solution is never just software
The functioning of an AI application rarely depends on source code alone. Model weights, fine-tuning, system prompts, datasets, agent logic, workflows, and the external AI platforms on which everything runs are at least as decisive in whether a system continues to function. Furthermore, what is feasible to safeguard depends on how an organization deploys AI. If the AI runs embedded in a platform like Microsoft Copilot or Salesforce Einstein, the underlying model is usually out of reach, leaving mainly the organization’s own agents, prompts, and knowledge sources. If it is built on a platform or linked to an external model, such as via Microsoft Foundry, Amazon Bedrock, or a direct API to GPT, Claude, or Gemini, then it concerns the organization’s own code, prompts, configuration, and fine-tuning data. If the model itself has been trained or adapted, then almost the entire stack, including weights and training data, is under internal management. These three patterns determine what an AI escrow arrangement must specifically cover and are the starting point of our approach.
Three solutions instead of one generic label
AI escrow is often presented in the market as a single concept: a copy of what exists, in the event that a supplier disappears. Escrow4all makes a conscious distinction within this, because continuity, compliance, and internal knowledge assurance are different requirements that demand different content.
- AI Continuity Escrow protects the continuity of an AI solution in the event that an external supplier or technology fails.
- AI Evidence Escrow independently records how an AI system was configured at a specific moment for compliance, audit, or internal accountability.
- Internal AI Escrow safeguards AI developed by an organization itself, independent of the developer, consultant, or the team that built it.
The same three implementation patterns (embedded, platform or compose, own model) determine what can specifically be deposited and verified for each solution.
Customization from the initial analysis
Escrow4all does not start an AI Escrow arrangement with a standard list of files, but with the question of what an organization wants to be able to demonstrate, restore, or continue. This also applies to the legal side: AI assets quickly involve intellectual property, licenses, privacy, and trade secrets, so the legal scope is always aligned with the technical reality of the AI solution, not the other way around. Depending on the objective, we verify a deposit at three levels: from an Integrity Check that demonstrates that the material is present and intact, to a Recovery Verification that investigates whether the deposit is usable to reconfigure the solution, to a Reproducibility & Functional Verification where a model, workflow, or AI solution is actually restored and tested in a controlled environment.
Escrow4all already manages more than 430 active escrow arrangements and 400 suppliers in the Benelux, from an ISO 27001-certified environment. AI Escrow follows the same approach, applied to a new layer of technology.
Conclusion
AI dependency requires a continuity discussion that goes further than “we have a copy of the code.” In the coming weeks, separate blogs will follow that go deeper into each of the three solutions: continuity in the event of supplier failure, demonstrability for auditors and regulators, and the safeguarding of self-built AI. If you don’t want to wait and want to map out which AI dependencies are most urgent for your organization now, schedule a meeting.
